NORWALK, Conn. -- A Norwalk man was arrested on a number of charges Thursday after police said they found a gun and drugs in his car.

Sidney Elmore, 63, was charged with criminal possession of a pistol or revolver, carrying a gun without a permit, weapons in a motor vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, possession of less than a half-ounce of marijuana, illegal possession near a school and improper signal for a turn. He was held on $250,000 bond and appeared in court Friday.

Elmore was pulled over on Golden Hill Street on Thursday afternoon by members of the Special Services Division after making a traffic violation, police said.

Elmore has been the target of a number of investigations in the past, and had been arrested in July on drug and firearms charges, according to police.

After being pulled over Thursday, a drug-sniffing dog indicated the presence of narcotics in the car, according to police reports.

Officers found some marijuana under the driver's seat, as well as some loose prescription pills that police said Elmore had attempted to discard after getting stopped. In the backseat, officers found a semi-automatic handgun in a plastic shopping bag, as well as dozens of rounds of ammunition, according to police reports.

Elmore was taken into custody without incident, police said. Norwalk police are currently working with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to trace the weapon and determine its origin.
