Oliva Cevallos, 20, and Richard Gordon, 19, of Dolton, Ill., were each charged with first-degree forgery, sixth-degree larceny, two counts of criminal attempt at sixth-degree larceny and two counts of conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny. Each was held on $20,000 bond.
On Monday, Oct. 20, police responded to Gopher Ice Cream on the Post Road on a report of a woman trying to pass a fake $100 bill.
Employees told police that the woman, later identified as Cevallos, had taken an item out of the freezer and tried to pay with it with a $100 bill. The employee used a counterfeit detection pen to check the bill, and it appeared legitimate, police said. But on further inspection, the employee noticed the markings appeared fake, according to police reports. The employee told Cevallos that she couldn't make change for a large bill, and Cevallos said she would go to another store to get change.
A few minutes later, a man later identified as Gordon entered and asked for two scoops of ice cream, and tried to pay for the $4.99 transaction with a $100 bill, police said. The employee told him that she couldn't accept the bill, and he left.
Police checked with other stores, and found that Cevallos had bought $7.64 worth of items at Panera and Gordon had bought a $3.50 croissant at Espresso Neat, according to police reports. They had also both tried to buy items at Everything Is Rosey but had been turned away, police said.
The Gopher employee pointed Gordon out to an officer as he was getting into a car parked on Brook Street, police said. Cevallos was also in the car, and police said that she had money in her hand that she tried to hide when she spotted the officer.
Police reported that the odor of marijuana could be detected from the car, which also had a 20-year-old Bronx man and a 17-year-old Bronx boy as passengers.
Police canine Zulu was brought to conduct a free air sniff, and found marijuana residue in the passenger compartment, police said. Cevallos and Gordon were both arrested.
