The two-car crash happened at about 11:40 a.m. Friday when an SUV crossed over the median of Route 8 and collided head-on with another vehicle, State Trooper Kelly Grant said in a statement.

James Paules, 39, of 22 Union St., Shelton, was driving south on Route 8 between Exits 8 and 9, Grant said.

For an unknown reason, Paules lost control of his Toyota Rav4 and traveled over the grass median and into the northbound lanes of travel, she said.

As the SUV continued southbound in the northbound lanes, it slammed head-on into a Nissan Rogue with a driver and passenger aboard, Grant said.

Paules was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, she said. The other driver was transported to St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport and the passenger to Bridgeport Hospital, both with non-life-threatening injuries, Grant said.

The crash occurred near the Merritt Parkway entrance ramp and caused large traffic tie-ups in the area.

State Police are continuing to investigate the fatal accident. Any witnesses are asked to call state police at 203-696-2500.
