Natalie Gainer of Norwalk has been charged with negligent homicide with a motor vehicle, failure to grant right of way to pedestrians in a crosswalk and obstructed view. She turned herself in to police Friday morning. She was released on a promise to appear in state Superior Court in Stamford on Sept. 19.

Gainer was southbound in a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe shortly after noon when the accident occurred, police said. She was in the left lane and as she attempted to make a left on to Hoyt Street, she struck Pielert, police said.

Pielert was trapped underneath the Tahoe and had to be extricated by the Stamford Fire Department. She died later that day in Stamford Hospital.

Gainer was also transported to the Stamford Hospital and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries after the accident.

The arrest came just two days after the city of Stamford announced an initiative to improve traffic safety. Three pedestrians have been struck by cars and killed this year in Stamford. Read more about the initiative here in the Daily Voice.
