NORWALK, Conn. -- Four Norwalk police officers are being honored for their role in rescuing a group of 11 people Sept. 26 from a sinking boat near Shea Island.

Norwalk Police Commission officials recently named Officer Russ Ouellette, Officer Mark Suda, Officer Vidal Gonez and Officer Rich Dellalo as the September Officers of the Month.

The Sept. 26 incident started as a report at 8:09 p.m. of a boat taking on water. When officers arrived, they found the 11 passengers, including children, got off the boat and were swimming back to Shea Island. The group had been camping there.

Facing rough conditions, the officers rescued all 11 people and took them to the Veteran’s Park Docks, where Norwalk Emergency Medical Service checked two children for exposure.

The boat had some kind of mechanical problem, causing it to take on water, officials said.
