The department is adding patrols for the checkpoints through a federal grant from the Department of Transportation's National Highway Safety Unit.

During the campaign, instead of warnings, officers will issue tickets to motorists who are not wearing seat belts. Norwalk Police Sgt. Melissa Lepore is supervising the initiative.

The first checkpoint is planned for Tuesday from 7 a.m. to noon at a location to be determined. The department is planning additional checkpoints from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 10 and 3 to 7 p.m. Dec. 12. Whether the department plans to set additional checkpoints during the month was not disclosed.
