Increased traffic, they say, means that drivers – especially those sleepy from their huge Thanksgiving repast – need to take extra care.

"Safety begins behind the wheel and we are asking all motorists to follow the rules of the road and to drive safely," said Lt. Terrence Blake. "We will make every effort to remove aggressive and impaired drivers off the road. We are also asking law-abiding motorists to report drivers who endanger others. In addition to roadway safety, we ask that everyone be careful regardless of what your plans consist of during the Thanksgiving holiday.”

But all drivers must do their bit by staying alert and following the rules, he said.

To that end, police are offering the following tips:

  • Think ahead. Prior to traveling, get a map or download the latest GPS data. Plan your route and let others know of your arrival and departure destination. Keep in touch with others, informing of them of your location.
  • Try to travel during the daylight hours.
  • Do not pick up hitchhikers or stranded motorists. If you see someone in need, report it to police at your earliest, and safest, opportunity. Obviously, don’t text or phone if you are the one doing the driving.
  • Have a fully charged cell phone and vehicle charger with you.
  • If lost, find a business, police station or fire department to ask for directions.
  • If your car breaks down, pull over as far as possible on the shoulder and activate your emergency flashers. Call for help from a reputable source and/or call police.
  • If you feel you are being followed, don’t drive home. Call police and follow the directions they give you.
  • Make sure your fuel tank is full.
  • Carry breakdown and first aid kits.
  • And, finally, if you feel yourself getting tired, pull over at a safe location and take a break.
