NORWALK, Conn. – A 54-year-old Waterbury man, who police said is suspected of dealing narcotics, was arrested by Norwalk police Thursday evening after leading police on a slow car chase through several city streets.

Nelson Aponte, of Willow Street in Waterbury, was charged with a host of misdemeanor motor vehicle violations in connection with the incident, which occurred at about 9:30 p.m.

Police said Aponte was seen driving erratically on Benedict Avenue, but when officers tried to pull him over he refused and kept driving at low rate of speed. He eventually struck a fence with his car on Stuart Avenue and kept driving until he was finally pulled over on Harbor Avenue.

Once he was pulled over, Aponte refused to get out of the car and was forcibly dragged out of the vehicle and hit the pavement, where he suffered minor cuts to his head, police said.

Aponte was wanted on a warrant as a suspect in connection with dealing of heroin and crack cocaine in January on Larson Street, police said, and he was charged with misdemeanor possession of narcotics, sale of narcotics near a school and other related violations.

Police said Aponte tried to hide the drugs in the wheel wells of parked cars.

He was held in lieu of a $20,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on Monday.
