Hiroko Kurihara, 46, was charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor and two counts of unattended child left in a car. She was held on $10,000 bond.

Police responded to the parking garage at 770 Connecticut Ave. at 12:20 p.m. on a report of a crying infant who had been left alone in a car. When officers arrived, they found the infant had been left in a Toyota SUV with the windows rolled up, according to police.

With the assistance of the Norwalk Fire Department, the officers were able to gain entry to the SUV. The infant was taken to Norwalk Hospital for evaluation and later released to the custody of the father, police said.

At the same time as they gained entry, the mother, Kurihara, came back to the car, police said. An investigation determined that Kurihara had left the child in the car while working out at the gym for an hour in the morning, and again for 30 minutes at midday, according to police. She was arrested at the scene.

Norwalk Police Chief Thomas Kulhawik praised the concerned citizen who, after hearing what she believed to be a baby in distress, spent several minutes searching for the child. When she found the infant alone, she immediately called the police and waited by the car until officers arrived. Kulhawik said the baby is safe Wednesday night due to the concern of this caring citizen.
