Martinez was shot and killed at about 2:16 a.m. Thursday on Leonard Street near Isaac Street, police said. Officers who arrived on the scene attempted to provide medical aid to Martinez but discovered that he was deceased, police said.

Officers are investigating the shooting, which is the fist homicide the city has seen since October 2012.

Police had received a call from a driver who reported seeing a man down in the area of Isaac Street. When responding to the area, officers found the victim lying on the pavement of nearby Leonard Street.

The Detective Bureau and the Crime Scene Unit responded to the scene of the shooting. Investigators documented the scene, collected evidence and canvassed the neighborhood for leads. After the body was found, some residents did report hearing shots fired, police said.

The victim was found on the sidewalk on Leonard Street, near SoNo Studios and the All-In Hookah Lounge. The crime scene had been cleared by late Thursday morning, and a lit candle had been placed on the sidewalk in honor of the victim.

"We are looking for public assistance on this homicide," said Lt. Paul Resnick.
