Norwalk Police: Guns, Knives, Found In Fairfield Man's Vehicle After Crash

NORWALK, Conn. -- A Fairfield man is facing serious charges after weapons, including a handgun reported stolen in Alabama, were found in his vehicle after he slammed into a telephone pole Tuesday afternoon in Norwalk, according to police.

Todd Abbruzzese, 45, of 6 Garden Square, was charged with carrying a gun without a permit, carrying a dangerous weapon, weapons in a motor vehicle, theft of a firearm, possession of a high capacity magazine after Jan. 1, 2014, that was obtained prior to April 5, 2013, failure to register high capacity, misuse of plate, reckless driving and no insurance. His bond was set at $75,000.

Police received a telephone call shortly after 3 p.m. of a motorist who had slammed into the utility pole in the area of Wilson Avenue and Martin Luther King Avenue, Sgt. Sofia Gulino said.

When officers arrived they saw Abbruzzese standing and talking with a witness. Shortly after he was transported to hospital. The small Hyundai SUV sustained serious front-end damage in the accident. It also had West Virginia plates on it, plates that didn't the vehicle, police said.

While the vehicle was seriously damaged, what was inside the vehicle could have caused serious damage as police found the stolen handgun, a pellet rife, a high capacity magazine, a bayonet, a machete, a Ghurka knive, a duffle bag with additional unspecified ammunition, two metal chains that were described as being commonly used as fighting chains, two gas masks, military surplus items and camping equipment, Gulino said.

Police also found a large amount of construction equipment and personal clothes, Gulino said.

There was no information on the extent of his injuries.
