Norwalk Police, Fire Officials Hold Practice Rescue Dive In Icy Waters

NORWALK, Conn. -- The Marine Divisons of the Norwalk Fire Department and Police Department recently participated in a joint exercise involving a car in the water off a boat launch ramp.

The exercise was designed to test the departments' ability to rescue or recover an occupant from a submerged vehicle. Officers in the division went out onto the icy waters of Long Island Sound and the Norwalk River for the drill last week.

The vehicle was donated by Lajoie’s Scrap Metal & Recycling business. Its motor and transmission were removed to prevent any contaminants from entering Long Island Sound during the exercise.

Nat’s Towing service provided a flatbed and tow truck to retrieve the sunken vehicle, and the Roton Point Association allowed the use of their boat launch ramp.
