Officers had surrounded a home at 159 West Rocks Road after receiving a report from a third party that the man inside the home planned to harm himself with a firearm, police said.

The Patrol Division and the Emergency Service Unit were dispatched to the scene and secured the area. The man was located inside the home and taken into protective custody within an hour of the arrival of officers. He was subsequently taken to Norwalk Hospital for evaluation.

Nobody was injured during the incident, and the Detective Bureau is now investigating.

The road had been closed off at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday as Norwalk police tried to establish communication with the person.

"I was just watching TV, and I saw the cops come," said Jessica Kindilien, a neighbor who lives across the street from where the police activity is focused. "I saw police with a sniper rifle outside. They told me to take cover and hide."

They later made her evacuate her home.

She doesn't know her neighbor, but said she heard he had barricaded himself inside the home.

Norwalk police squad cars were parked all over the area with ambulances on standby. The police K-9 units were also on the scene.
