NORWALK, Conn. — When former New Haven Police Officer Tiffany Ortiz joined the force in Norwalk, she was the first female Latino officer hired in Norwalk in 30 years, according to The Hour.

Ortiz was recruited thanks to the efforts of Norwalk Police Deputy Chief Ashley Gonzalez to add female and minority officers to the department, The Hour said.

Gonzalez said he contacted Ortiz after reading about a case in which she talked a suicidal man, who was holding a baby, to hand her the baby and come in off a roof, The Hour said. He told The Hour that he is excited to have Ortiz onboard.

The department has 179 officers — with 17 women, two of whom are African-American and 14 are white, The Hour said. It is working to hire officers who represent the city's diverse population, The Hour said.

Ortiz, who has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Albertus Magnus College, is undergoing training before joining the patrol division.
