Norwalk Police Chief Announces Retirement

NORWALK, Conn. – Norwalk Police Chief Harry Rilling announced Thursday that he will be stepping down on Friday. Deputy Chief Thomas Kulhawik will serve as acting chief until a permanent replacement is found.

Rilling said that he will be taking a job in the private sector, though he declined to comment on where he would be going because the details of his new position have not been finalized.

“You have to know when it’s time to move on and let someone else take the department to the next level,” Rilling said.

Mayor Richard Moccia said that the city will begin looking for a replacement for Rilling, and should hopefully make a decision within the next couple of weeks.

“Any advancement will come from within this department,” Moccia said, adding that they will not be interviewing anyone from outside the department for the position.

Rilling has served with the Norwalk Police Department for 41 years, and was appointed chief in 1995. He began tearing up a little as he reflected on his time as chief, but believes the department will be able to carry on without him.

“I think the transition will be seamless,” Rilling said. “My successor will hit the ground running.”
