NORWALK, Conn. -- The Norwalk Police Department recognized Detective Nick Kougioumtzidis, Officer Max Sixto and Officer Chris Kassimis as the August 2017 Officers of the Month for their work investigating drug overdoses and stolen cars.
Kougioumtzidis was recognized for his work investigating a pair of drug overdoses, one of which was fatal and one where the victim was saved. As a result of his investigation, a suspect was charged in connection with the overdoses, police said. This was the first charged death involving Fentanyl-laced crack cocaine in Connecticut, according to police.
Chief Thomas Kulhawik told Kougioumtzidis that the citizens of Norwalk were indebted to him for his pursuit of the individual responsible for the sale of this life-threatening drug.
Sixto and Kassimis were recognized for recovering a stolen car and arresting three occupants, police said. They saw the car traveling on a city street about four hours after it was reported stolen, and were able to conduct a traffic stop and arrest the three juveniles inside. While they were arresting the three juveniles, another juvenile approached the scene and attempted to incite a disturbance, police said. They were able to take him into custody before he escalated the situation.
Kulhawik thanked the officers for their keen observation and professionalism under pressure.
