On Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1982, at 8:04 a.m. Norwalk Police Office Dan Lasprogato was patrolling the area of Broad Street and St. Mary’s Cemetery when he discovered the body a white male just northeast of the flag pole circle.
The victim was later identified through fingerprints as Leonardo “Leo” De La Vega of Milford. The autopsy found that De La Vega died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds, according to police.
De La Vega's wife was notified and she immediately stated, “I knew it, I knew they were going to kill him, I know who did it” to the detectives, according to police reports.
Mrs. De La Vega provided police with the names of two suspect names and went on to tell the detectives that her husband dealt cocaine and may have owed several thousand dollars to his supplier, police said.
The investigation into the two suspects named produced a third suspect who was reported to be operating De La Vega’s red Chevrolet Chevette in Bridgeport on the night that De La Vega was last seen or heard from, police said.
During the investigation, officers learned that De La Vega may have owed this third suspect money for cocaine that was “fronted” to him. Sufficient probable cause was not developed in the investigation to receive an arrest warrant for any suspect in the investigation and the case remains open.
