NORWALK, Conn. -- Norwalk police arrested two men after a late-night search through a wooded area near Route 7 and are searching for a third suspect after a couple reported being robbed at an ATM on Tuesday night, police said.
Kevin Banegas-Gomez, 18, and Rolando Garcia-Navarro, 24, of Bridgeport were each charged with first-degree robbery, second-degree assault, second-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit robbery, assault and larceny. Each was held on $200,000 bond and will appear in court July 18.
A couple flagged down officers near Belden Avenue and Byington Place at about 10 p.m. Tuesday and reported they had been robbed outside the People's Bank on Belden Avenue, police said.
They said they were at the ATM when three Hispanic men approached them, police said. The men were believed to be carrying knives, police said.
The couple told police that the men grabbed them, punched one of them in the face, and stole an undisclosed amount of money before running off toward the Route 7 connector.
Police set up a perimeter and began searching the wooded area near the Route 7 connector. The K-9 unit was called in, and dogs were used to search for the suspects in the area.
Officers located Banegas-Gomez and Garcia-Navarro in the woods, and both were taken into custody, police said. When approached by the police dogs, Banegas-Gomez tried to fight one of the dogs and was bitten, according to police reports. He was transported to the hospital for treatment. The dog was not injured.
Police were unable to locate the third suspect Tuesday night and are continuing their search for him Wednesday.
