Norwalk Pair Charged With Check Theft, Forgery

NORWALK, Conn. – A Norwalk woman was charged with stealing a relative’s checkbook and then using it to write checks to another suspect, according to police reports.

Dawn Tortora, 44, of Lakewood Drive was accused of breaking into a relative’s home while the resident was on vacation earlier this month, police said. Investigators believe Tortora used a screwdriver to break into the house and took checks from a checkbook inside, according to the police report.

The checks were filled out and cashed by Mark Turlis, 43, of Donohue Drive, police said. Tortora and Turlis were both arrested on warrants over the weekend.

Tortora and Turlis were each charged with third-degree forgery, third-degree burglary and conspiracy. Turlis was also charged with fifth-degree larceny. Both are scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 30.
