The department’s Marine Unit announced this week that it is taking part in Operation Dry Water, a national awareness and enforcement campaign.
The unit said it is going after impaired boaters with the help of the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and the U.S. Coast Guard.
The crackdown will include an increase in the number of law enforcement officers on the water and at recreational boating checkpoints, police said.
It is scheduled to run from Friday, June 24, through Sunday, June 26.
"We know there will be a lot of boaters out enjoying the warmer weather and we want boaters to know we will be out making sure the water stays safe for them to enjoy," said Lt. Terry Blake.
In Connecticut, it is illegal to operate a vessel with a blood alcohol level of .08 -- the same concentration attached to operating a motor vehicle.
Police are asking anyone who suspects impaired boating is going on to call (203)-854-3111.
Anonymous Internet tips can be sent to the Norwalk Police website, www.norwalkpd.com
Anonymous text tips can be submitted by typing "NPD" into the text field, followed by the message, and sending it to CRIMES (274637).
“If you are found to be impaired and operating a boat, we will arrest you,” Blake said.
