Norwalk Man Who Died In Fire Complicated By Hoarding Identified

NORWALK, Conn. — A man who died in a fire in Norwalk Saturday that was complicated by hoarding conditions has been identified as 67-year-old Fredrick Bassler, according to the Hour.

Firefighters responded to the home on West Rocks Road at 1:14 p.m. Saturday after a driver spotted smoke coming from the house, according to the Hour. It took them almost two hours to knock down the fire, due to extreme hoarding conditions that made locating Bassler and extinguishing the fire very difficult, the Hour reported.

Trash was piled about three feet high inside the home, fire officials told the Hour. It is the second fatal fire in the past two months that was complicated by hoarding conditions, the Hour reported. Neighbors had been concerned about the hoarding, which is becoming more common across the country and is a widespread problem in Norwalk, the Hour reported.

Fire officials told the Hour that the cause of the fire is under investigation.
