Norwalk Man Hits Crossing Signal, Charged With DUI

NORWALK, Conn. – A Norwalk man was charged with driving under the influence after knocking over a traffic signal on Connecticut Avenue on Thursday afternoon, police say.

Employees at two nearby businesses reported the accident at about 3:45 p.m. Thursday. A car on Connecticut Avenue drove into a pedestrian crossing signal near the intersection with Stuart Avenue and then drove off, according to the police report. No injuries were reported in the incident.

The witnesses gave police the license plate of the car, which was listed at an Ivy Street residence, police say. An officer met Mario Mata, 43, of that address when he arrived home. Mata admitted that he had left the scene because he was drunk at the time, according to the police report.

Mata was charged with driving under the influence, evading responsibility, reckless driving, failure to drive on the right and driving with a suspended license. His bond was set at $2,500, and he is due in court on Aug. 22.
