Jovan Smith, 23, was charged with interfering with an officer and first-degree criminal trespass. He was held on a $5,000 bond and will appear in court Sept. 3.

An officer patrolling Colonial Village spotted Smith hanging outside and recognized him from a previous encounter, police said. The officer knew that Smith was not supposed to be near any housing projects as a condition of his probation, and approached him, according to police. When Smith saw the officer, he got up to leave and kept saying that he was leaving without stopping.

Smith then took off running, according to police reports. The officer chased him and drew his Taser, police said. He attempted to Tase Smith but Smith managed to elude him, according to police reports.

Another officer arrived and saw Smith running on West Cedar Street and also engaged in the foot pursuit. Smith ran into his West Cedar Street home and ran right through and out the back door, according to police. He then ran into a field, police said. Police searched for him, and brought in a K-9 unit but were unable to locate him at that time. A warrant was issued for his arrest and he was taken into custody on Sunday.
