NORWALK, Conn. -- A Norwalk man was arrested after police said he tried to cash a lottery ticket he had stolen from a grocery store.

Anthony Jones, 34, was charged with fourth-degree larceny and third-degree burglary.

The arrest stems from a complaint police received on the morning of March 23. An employee of the Super 7 Food Market on New Canaan Avenue told police that the night before somebody had entered the store and stolen $160 in cash from the register and $1,220 worth of lottery tickets.

The person had gained entry through a back door, which was closed but not locked, police said. The store had an alarm system that was not activated, as well as surveillance footage, police said. The employee told police that he had let Jones, a frequent customer, use the bathroom the night before, and that he suspected Jones may have left the back door unlocked.

Norwalk police received a call from the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection two days later, reporting that somebody had tried to cash one of the stolen lottery tickets at a market in Bridgeport.

The department sent a picture of the person to the Norwalk police, who showed it to the employee. The employee identified the man in the picture as Jones. Police applied for an arrest warrant for Jones, and took him into custody Sunday morning.
