Cesar Lorenzo, 33, was charged with driving while intoxicated, operating without a license and failure to drive right. He posted $2,500 bond and will appear in court Oct. 2.

Lorenzo was driving his 1999 Saturn on Old Kings Highway South when he collided head-on with Sgt. Jeremiah Johnson at about 3:53 a.m. Sunday, police said.

Johnson, a shift supervisor, was driving west on Old Kings Highway South in a 2015 Ford Explorer SUV and Lorenzo was traveling east in the westbound lane when they collided, police said.

Johnson suffered minor injuries and was taken to Stamford Hospital, where he was treated and released, police said. Lorenzo was not injured.

Due to a language barrier, an officer from Stamford was called to translate for Lorenzo at the scene, police said.

Lorenzo told police that he had five to seven beers before driving, police said. He submitted to a field sobriety test, which he failed, according to police reports. He was taken back to police headquarters, where blood alcohol tests revealed a BAC of .1516 and .1409, according to police.

Both cars were towed from the crash site. Police said that a large push bar on the front of the Ford Explorer likely saved it from being completely totaled in the crash.
