David Shavers, 20, was charged with interfering with an officer, operating with a suspended license, failure to obey a stop sign, failure to come to a complete stop and engaging in pursuit. He was held on a $2,500 bond and will appear in court Aug. 3.

On the morning of June 7 officers saw a Chrysler with New Jersey plates that did not come to a complete stop at a stop sign on North Taylor Avenue. The car was pulled over, and Shavers got out of the car, police said. The officer got out of his cruiser and told Shavers to get back in his car, at which point Shavers got back in and drove off, according to police reports.

The officer pursued Shavers to Colonial Village on West Cedar Street, where Shavers got out of his car again and fled on foot, police said. Police detained the car, which had a passenger still sitting inside. The passenger said initially that she just knew Shavers by his first name, and that she had been waiting for a bus when he drove by and offered her a ride. When she was reminded that lying to police could result in charges, she identified Shavers to police, according to police reports.

A warrant was issued for Shavers arrest. On Thursday officers spotted Shavers driving and knowing that there was an active warrant, they stopped him and took him into custody without incident.
