Officers on patrol in a cruiser equipped with a license plate reader were sitting on the side of Hoyt Street in Darien on Wednesday, July 12 observing traffic. A gray Toyota Camry with a Connecticut license plate drove by, and the license plate reader indicated that the car's registration was coming back as stolen, police said.

The car pulled into a driveway on Phillips Lane and parked, and the officers pulled up behind it and turned on their emergency lights. Because the car came back as stolen, the officers ordered the driver, later identified as 40-year-old Terrance Parker of Norwalk, to step out and he was handcuffed, police said.

Parker told the officers that the car belonged to his "cousin Wayne's girlfriend," but dispatch told the officers that the car had been reported stolen from Newark, N.J. in May, according to police. At that point, Parker was placed under arrest.

Parker said he had picked up the car that morning at a repair garage in Stamford, and that he had his cousin's permission and didn't know why it had been reported stolen, police said. He said he was on Phillips Lane to give an estimate for the rubbish removal company he worked for, according to police.

Police contacted Parker's supervisor, who said that Parker was not supposed to be in that area, had not been asked to get an estimate, and was supposed to be in Stamford, according to police.

Police also determined that Parker's license had been suspended, and that there was an active arrest warrant for him for a hit and run in New Canaan.

Once they got to headquarters, police contacted the person that Parker claimed was his cousin. The person said that he was not related to Parker, nor had he seen the car since it was stolen in May. He said he had not given Parker permission to use it, police said.

The officers also found a prescription bottle in the car, and contacted the person whose name was on it. Parker had said the person was his brother, but the person told police that he was only an acquaintance of Parker's, and that he saw Parker driving the Camry two days prior. At the time, Parker had said he was going to purchase the car from his "cousin Wayne," according to police.

Parker was charged with second-degree larceny and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license. He was held on a $50,000 bond and taken to court the next day.
