Andre Dawson, 37, was charged with criminal possession of a firearm and third-degree criminal trespassing. He was held on $100,000 bond and will appear in court Jan. 12.
On the night of Aug. 10 members of the department's Street Crimes Unit were patrolling in the area of Washington Village when they spotted a group of four men in the housing complex, police said. The officers approached the men and identified them as nonresidents in violation of the housing complex's "no trespassing" policy, according to police reports.
As the officers were speaking with the four men, they also checked the area and found a discarded firearm on the ground, police said. The weapon was identified as a Taurus .38 special, police said.
All four men were detained for the officers' safety, police said, and additional units were called to the scene. All four men were interviewed and denied ownership of the gun.
Police obtained a warrant to get DNA samples from the men to try to match it to DNA found on the gun.
Lab results showed that the DNA matched that of Dawson, who was standing a few feet from where the gun was found at the time of the incident, police said. A warrant was issued for his arrest.
On Monday, officers went to his residence on Winfield Street and located him in a basement, police said. He was taken into custody without incident.
