Alvaro Lainez, 30, was charged with third-degree burglary and conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny. He was held on $50,000 bond and will appear in court Nov. 6.
Police received a report on Sept. 15 from the owner of a roofing company, who said that several thousand dollars worth of copper and a work vehicle had been stolen from his garage on Geneva Road.
An entire palette of copper sheeting and several boxes of copper downspouts were taken. The owner told police that he believed it might have been Lainez, who had been fired a month earlier. Lainez was mad that he had not received money he believed he was owed, and told his former employer that he would pay, according to police reports.
Police received a call from someone who saw two Hispanic males cutting copper up and putting it in a van at a Lexington Avenue garage. The garage owner told police that he rents it out to roofers and allowed them to search it. They found several pieces of copper, which the owner of the roofing company was able to identify as pieces that were stolen from him, based on holes that were drilled in them.
Police spoke with Lainez, who admitted that he had a dispute with his former employer over pay, but denied any involvement or knowledge of the theft, according to police. Police spoke with a witness, who said that Lainez and others had stolen the copper, police said. A warrant was issued for his arrest and he was taken into custody on Monday, Oct. 27. Police said more arrests may be pending in the case.
