William Varela-Araya, 43, was charged with assault on a peace officer, disorderly conduct, second-degree threatening and interfering with an officer. He was held on a $75,000 bond and appeared in court Monday.

Police responded to a home on Fairview Avenue at 1:33 a.m., Saturday, on a report of a disturbance. When police arrived, they encountered Varela-Araya, who appeared to be intoxicated, according to police reports. He was yelling about somebody taking his money, police said. Witnesses told police that before the officers arrived, Varela-Araya pulled out a pair of scissors and began cutting his own hair, according to police.

Police said that when Varela-Araya encountered the officers, he squared up and made a punching motion towards them. They tried to arrest him, and said that he violently resisted. Officers were able to get him to the ground and handcuff him as he continued to resist, police said.

Police said that during the struggle he kicked one officer in the side of the head, causing a head injury. The officer was subsequently treated and released from Norwalk Hospital. After being handcuffed, Varela-Araya sat up and spun his body around, kicking another officer in the leg. He was then taken into custody.
