Norwalk Man Accused Of Hitting Man With Bat, Car

NORWALK, Conn. – A Norwalk man was charged with felony assault after striking a man with a baseball bat and hitting him with a pickup truck early Sunday on Stuart Avenue, police said.

A Stamford man was leaving a picnic with friends on Stuart Avenue shortly after midnight when Enrique Higareda Jr., 21, hit him with a small baseball bat then got back into his vehicle and struck him, according to the Norwalk Police Department.

Two witnesses gave police a partial license plate number, leading police to 123 W. Cedar St. Investigators learned that the pickup truck belonged to Higareda’s father, who said his son had been driving it earlier, Norwalk Police Sgt. Dave O’Connor said. The witnesses then identified the car and Higareda.

In his statement to police, Higareda denied hitting anyone. He told police he had stopped at Stuart Avenue because a group of people was blocking the way and refused to move even after he honked his horn several times.

According to the statement, the group was drunk, swore at him and threw a red plastic cup with “an alcoholic liquid,” O’Connor said. Higareda also told police that a man had come to the driver-side window and punched it several times but said he had left without injuring anyone in the crowd.

The victim was taken to Norwalk Hospital in an ambulance for treatment. O’Connor said he had no information about his status.

Higareda was charged with felony assault and breach of peace and posted $2,500 bond. He is due at Norwalk Superior Court on Sept. 27.
