NORWALK, Conn. – Two people were pulled from the water at the inlet off Veterans Memorial Park in East Norwalk late Saturday afternoon after they drove down a rocky embankment and their car sank under several feet of water and trapped them inside.
Emergency crews performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the unnamed male and female before they were taken to Norwalk Hospital for further treatment. Their conditions were unknown, but officers at the scene said vital signs were present in both inside the ambulance.
The cause of the car driving into the water is unknown, but Deputy Fire Chief Gino Gatto said that an eye witness told him that it appeared that one of victims was practicing how to drive.
The initial emergency call was received at about 4:45 p.m. In addition to Norwalk firefighters and police officers, divers from the Norwalk police department SCUBA team and Wilton EMS also responded.
The Wilton SCUBA team was notified for potential assistance, according to Norwalk Police Lt. Paul Resnick, but its services were not needed.
Gatto said at least two people, whose names were not released, jumped into the water to try to pull the two out of the car as it went under water, but it took eight firefighters to break the rear window and drag the two out. CPR was initially performed on a dock.
Two Norwalk firefighters suffered leg injuries when they were cut by glass, according to Gatto.
“The Norwalk Police Department will do the follow up investigation,” Gatto said.
In total, 17 members from the Norwalk Fire Department responded to the scene from Engine 3 and Engine 1, Rescue 1, Truck 2 and Car 2.
