"The decision to make the new Fire Headquarters LEED Gold demonstrates the department’s consideration for efficient ongoing operations and maintenance and a respect for conservative government budgets," Fire Chief Denis McCarthy said in a press release.

“Thanks to the commitment and efforts of the design and construction teams from the Fire Department and City, the new Fire Station is an impressive green building that will serve the City for decades.”

The 32,000-square-foot building, located at 121 Connecticut Ave., is the first municipal LEED Gold building in Norwalk and the second LEED Gold firehouse in the state.

Pacheco/Ross Architects designed the building, and Newfield Construction built it.

About 20 percent of the firehouse’s materials were from recycled content, and 75 percent of the construction waste was diverted from landfills.

The building was designed to use as little energy as possible, thus making it “green.”
