Gilchrist is no stranger to the department. His brother, Kevin, is a 10-year veteran and his father, Kevin Sr., retired from the department last year after 33 years on the job.

For the past five months, Gilchrist has worked for the Westport Fire Department. He graduated from the Connecticut Fire Academy in December, and he was Norwalk’s top candidate out of more than 1,000 who tested for the job.

Gilchrist completed his first day on the job Monday. His swearing-in ceremony was attended by his wife, Donna, and his children Maren and Ryan, as well as his brother and his father.
