The Norwalk Fire Department is advising residents to seek out options to cool down, such as going to public libraries. Residents should dress for the heat by wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing, which will reflect away some of the sun's energy. It is also a good idea to wear hats or use an umbrella.

"Extreme hot weather can be very dangerous, especially for the elderly, young children and those who work outdoors," said Fire Chief Denis McCarthy. "Remember to take frequent breaks if working outside and drink plenty of water to beat the heat."

Drink continuously, even if you do not feel thirsty, and avoid alcohol and caffeine which can dehydrate the body. Never leave people, especially children, and pets in a closed, parked vehicle. You should also eat more meals and eat more often, and avoid high-protein foods, which can increase metabolic heat.

Residents should slow down and avoid strenuous activity. If you must do strenuous activity, try to do it during the coolest part of the day, which is usually in the morning between 4 and 7 a.m. Stay indoors if possible, and if air-conditioning is not available, stay on the lowest floor out of the sunshine. Remember that electric fans do not cool, they simply circulate the air.

Fire officials are also asking residents to be good neighbors. During hot days, check in on elderly residents in your neighborhood and those who do not have air-conditioning.

Avoid getting too much sun, and remember that sunburn makes the job of heat dissipation more difficult. If you do not have air-conditioning or fans in your home, the libraries and City Hall are open and serve as the city's cooling centers.
