NORWALK, Conn. --- Using a federal grant, the Norwalk Fire Department has purchased 132 new escape systems, which will allow firefighters to safely jump through windows during an emergency, according to a press release.

The $158,598 grant announced in June will pay for these systems, featuring harnesses and ropes that hook directly to firefighter turnout gear. The ropes are operated via hands-free devices to reduce the speed of descent. The grant will also cover the cost of training firefighters in using the systems.

“Firefighters caught above the fire will be able to escape through windows or rescue and lower fire victims using this system,” said Denis McCarthy, Norwalk Fire Chief and Emergency Management director, in a press release.

The grant program is administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration.

U.S. Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) announced the grant with U.S. Rep. Jim Himes (D-4th District).

"The Norwalk Fire Department is grateful for the support our Congressional Delegation has provided to sustain the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program,” said McCarthy. “The NFD is fortunate to receive a 2014 AFG grant to enhance firefighter safety.”
