Firefighters responded to the two-story, two-family home at 18 Reservoir Ave. at 12:47 a.m. There was heavy smoke coming from the rear of the home as firefighters arrived, according to the Norwalk Fire Department. The firefighters extinguished the blaze before searching the home.
Fire officials said the owner of the home, who lives on the first floor, was awakened by the second-floor tenants, who smelled smoke, and evacuated.
Due to fire and heat damage to the water pipes and electrical wiring, the home was declared unfit for occupancy. The owner will be staying with a neighbor while the two second-floor occupants will be staying with relatives, fire officials said.
A total of 24 firefighters responded to the scene with three engines. Fire Inspector Luca Feola is investigating the cause of the blaze.
