Norwalk Fire Chief McCarthy Offers Hurricane Season Tips

NORWALK, Conn. – Area residents should prepare for hurricane season, which officially started Monday, said Norwalk Fire Chief Denis McCarthy in a press release.

At least one major hurricane with winds of at least 111 mph could happen this season, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast.

Though the forecast is below average, McCarthy warns Norwalk residents to not become complacent.

For example, Hurricane Andrew was the one hurricane that made landfall in 1992.

Also, the city was impacted by Hurricane Irene in 2011 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

“Preparedness is everyone’s responsibility. Residents need to plan now for possible evacuations, power outages and other challenges as this new hurricane season approaches, " McCarthy said. “Preparedness brings peace of mind. Having a good family communication plan, and updated emergency kit, as well as resources for protecting your home and property, can reduce a lot of stress.”
