Department personnel will be visiting schools, giving presentations and conducting station tours for school groups to spread the word about fire prevention and safety.

One of the best ways to prevent fires is to make sure the home has a working smoke detector. The Fire Department urges residents to make sure smoke detectors are operating and to change the batteries if necessary.

Nearly two-thirds of home-structure fire deaths occur in homes where there is no smoke alarm or where smoke alarms failed to operate because the batteries had been removed.

The Norwalk Fire Department has free smoke detectors for residents in need. For additional information, contact the fire marshal’s office at 203-854-0244.

Before Fire Prevention Week, the annual open house with fire, police and public works on Sept. 27 drew almost 2,000 participants.
