New Canaan Police Make Arrests For DUI, Drugs, Assault At Checkpoint

NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- New Canaan Police held a sobriety checkpoint this weekend where three people were charged with driving under the influence, three were charged with drug possession, one was charged with drinking while driving and one was charged with assault.

The checkpoint was held Saturday night from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Old Stamford Road at the entrance ramps to the Merritt Parkway at exit 36. 

Carlos Figueroa, 25, of Glen Cove, N.Y. was charged with use and possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of more than a half-ounce of marijuana. Police said the odor of marijuana was coming from his car when he approached the checkpoint, and a search turned up marijuana and paraphernalia. He was taken into custody due to the fact that he had 0.632 ounces of marijuana, police said.

When another person drove through the checkpoint, officers noticed that they had blood on their teeth and lip. When police asked the driver how they got the blood on their face, they said that 26-year-old Yaminah Vargas of Trumbull had struck them on the mouth while they were driving. Police said the assault was domestic in nature. Vargas was charged with third-degree assault and released at the scene.

Police said that 38-year-old Wilfredo Tello of Stamford drove through the sobriety checkpoint and passed field sobriety tests, but he had an open beer in the car that he had been drinking. He was charged with drinking while driving and issued a summons to appear in court.

Beiran Rolando Velasquez, 26, of New Canaan drove through the checkpoint and displayed signs of intoxication, police said. He failed his field sobriety tests and was charged with driving under the influence and operating without a license.

Andrew Wasencky, 41, of Norwalk drove through the checkpoint and displayed signs of intoxication, police said. He failed his field sobriety tests and was arrested, according to police. Police said they also found drug paraphernalia in his car. He was charged with operating under the influence and possession of drug paraphernalia. 

Jhony Saul Relayze-Vasconzuelo, 45, of Stamford drove through the checkpoint and displayed signs of intoxication, police said. He failed his field sobriety tests and was arrested, police said. He was charged with driving under the influence.

Police also issued infractions at the scene to a 35-year-old Stamford man and a 23-year-old Stamford man for possession of less than a half-ounce of marijuana.

"The New Canaan Police will continue to aggressively patrol for operators that are driving while being impaired to ensure that those traveling through New Canaan do so safely," police said.
