Norwalk police received a call from Ridgefield police that Edward King, 28, had been involved in a domestic dispute and was heading toward South Norwalk, possibly to purchase drugs, according to police reports.
Norwalk officers said they spotted his car on South Main Street and stopped him. Officers detected the odor of alcohol, and found a 13-inch stainless-steel knife with an 8-inch blade in his car, police said.
King reportedly told officers he had the knife to protect himself. He then started cursing and shouting racial slurs, according to police reports. He told officers he wasn't driving drunk, but that he had drank a beer and a liter of Jagermeister after he had been pulled over. His keys were in the ignition and the engine was on, police said.
King was charged with driving under the influence, carrying a weapon in his car and failure to renew his registration.
He posted a $2,500 bond and will appear in court on Feb. 14. Police said Ridgefield police have issued a summons for King for the domestic incident in Ridgefield.
