Robert Russell, 41, was charged with driving under the influence. He posted $250 bond and will appear in court Dec. 17.

Police received reports of an accident on West Norwalk Road near the Post Road at 11:13 p.m. Saturday.

While officers were en route, they received a report from police headquarters that the operator of the vehicle involved in the crash was attempting to leave, according to police reports.

They arrived to find that the truck had hit a tree on the side of the road, police said. The operator, Russell, was in the truck and uninjured, police said.

He was unsteady on his feet when he got out of the truck and struggled to maintain his balance, according to police. He told officers that his truck had gone off the road a bit, and he was trying to get it unstuck, police said.

Getting the truck unstuck would have been difficult because the front passenger-side wheel had become separated from the axle and the truck was not operable, according to police.

Russell told police that he'd had a few drinks, and when asked what shape he was in to drive he told them he was about 50 percent, according to police reports.

He failed a field sobriety test and was taken into custody. Back at police headquarters his blood alcohol level tested 0.23 and 0.21, police said.
