NORWALK, Conn. A large group of teenagers was involved in a fight late Friday night at the Norwalk Seaport Association's Oyster Festival, drawing Norwalk police out in force.
The fight happened at about 10 p.m. in the children's amusement area, across from the Norwalk High School dunk tank, according to a witness. A police officer at the scene said the kids broke up the fight themselves, scattering in every direction. He did not know of any arrests. He called it "10 minutes of nonsense" from "kids acting foolishly."
A Norwalk High School sophomore who was selling tickets for the dunk tank said she was "scared" and said every young person in front of her was involved. Another young person staffing an amusement hadn't seen the fight but estimated that 200 teenagers had been involved. They ran past her in a big crowd.
She said it was a shame that the misbehaving kids had "ruined it" for other people and said they should have been more aware of the young children in the area.
One witness had seen six police cruisers arrive to deal with the fight.
Ryan Essig, 15, said he had been in the carnival ride area, not far away, and had not seen the fight but had seen the young people involved running for the exit. He said it was not a big deal. "It's all hype," he said.
Update, 12:35 p.m. Saturday:
A Norwalk woman was arrested as a result of the incident, police sources said. It was apparent that a youth was hit over the head with a chair but police were unable to find him or the person who hit him. The person who was hit apparently took off his bloody shirt, put it in a trash can and left.
Ayanna Belton, 30, of 2 Fenwick Place used swear words as she loudly refused to leave the area of the incident, police say. Belton was told she'd be arrested if she didn't leave. She continued to swear and was arrested, which she resisted in a physical manner, police said. Belton was charged with breach of peace second degree and interfering with an officer. Bond was $475.
There were perhaps 15 young people involved in the skirmish, police said. As a chain reaction, youths ran to see what was happening, resulting in a group of perhaps 100 young people.
"It was just a bunch of kids running around aimlessly, being kids," Sgt. James Boff said.
