STAMFORD, Conn. — Thanks to quick-thinking witnesses who took photos of the fleeing car, Stamford police were able to make an arrest in a hit-and-run that left a man lying injured in a busy roadway on Saturday afternoon, according to the Stamford Advocate.

A 53-year-old man told police that he had waited for the signal as he crossed High Ridge Road near Square Acre Drive in the crosswalk, the Advocate said.

When a car came at him at a high rate of speed, he jumped back but was struck on the left side of his body and hit his head in the roadway, the Stamford Advocate said.

The man was bleeding from the head and climbed over a snowbank to get out of the roadway, the Advocate said. Witnesses took pictures of the fleeing car and its license plate, the Advocate said.

Officers tracked down the owner, Juan Barragan-Alvarez, 38, and charged him with evading responsibility, driving without a license and failure to grant the right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

He was the second pedestrian hit by a car last week in Stamford. On Tuesday morning, 58-year-old Lynette Wagner of Fairfield was struck and killed by a van as she crossed Elm Street near I-95 as she walked to work. Police have not filed charges in that fatal crash, which remains under investigation.
