Former Norwalk Cop Found Dead At Monroe Crash Scene

Updated at 9:05 p.m.: NORWALK, Conn. – A former Norwalk police officer was found dead Monday in an SUV that had apparently crashed in Monroe, according to published reports.

Monroe Patch reports that Liam Callahan, 42, of Newtown, was found Monday morning in a gully near Monroe Turnpike and Shelton Road. He was the lone occupant of the SUV, which was buried in heavy brush.

"Obviously the department is saddened by hearing the news of the tragedy," Norwalk Chief Thomas Kulhawik said. "Even though he left five years ago, I know that he still has friends that are members of the department. I'm sure it's hit them hard. Our condolences go out to his wife and his family."

Callahan worked for Sgt. Thomas Roncinske on the night shift. "Liam was a unique individual," Roncinske said in an email. "He deeply loved his family. He was a good friend and will be profoundly missed."

Callahan served for 11 years in Norwalk and resigned from the department in 2007, Kulhawik said. He worked for a security company and was co-owner of The Angry Pepper in Monroe, according to the Magner Funeral Home. He was married for 12 years and was the father of an 8-year-old son. He enjoyed cigars, hot sauce and hiking with his family.

His family will receive friends Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave., Norwalk. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Philip Church, 1 Father Conlon Place, Norwalk.

Other services will be held privately. Memorial donations may be made to the Ryan Callahan Scholarship Fund being set up by his family.
