NORWALK, Conn. -- Norwalk firefighters quickly knocked down a blaze that burned through the porch of a house at 60 William St. on Monday evening.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation, said Capt. Chris Roos. It started outside on the porch at about 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Engine Four from the Westport Avenue station was able to knock the fire down before it entered the house, Roos said. No one was injured during the fire.

"They knocked it down pretty quickly," said Lt. Fortunato Capomolla. He said it took less than 20 minutes for firefighters to extinguish the flames. The porch was destroyed by the blaze.

In all, 25 firefighters responded to the scene, Deputy Fire Chief Gino Gatto said.

The two occupants evacuated the home before the Fire Department arrived. The fire inspector was investigating the cause.

A second fire call was received at 6:47 p.m. on the third floor balcony of Avalon Gates at 26 Belden Ave., Gatto said.

A sprinkler activated on the balcony, holding the fire in check, he said. Firefighters extinguished the blaze via the bucket, Gatto said.

The apartment's occupant was not aware of the fire until the sprinkler opened up, he said. No injuries were reported, and the fire was under investigation.
