Fairfield Police Release Name of Girl Who Drowned

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield police have released the name of the 10-year-girl who drowned Tuesday while swimming at Lake Mohegan.

Catherine Celina Perez Trujillo, of Iranistan Avenue in Bridgeport, had been swimming with family members along a small beach on the north side of the lake Tuesday evening. She began swimming in an area where there is a sudden drop in depth along the lake floor, and disappeared under the water. Police say the water was about 15 feet deep where Trujillo went underwater.

Dive teams from Fairfield, Bridgeport and Westport were able to pull her out of the water about 45 minutes after she went under. She was then taken to Bridgeport Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Fairfield Police say the area where the girl was found is not one of the town’s designated swimming areas. The only section of Lake Mohegan where swimming is allowed is the southern section, patrolled by lifeguards. Police advise residents to stay in designated swimming areas for their safety.

“Bodies of water are unpredictable,” said Fairfield Police Chief Gary MacNamara. “That’s why we designate areas as safe swimming areas.”

CORRECTION: The name originally given by Fairfield Police was incorrect.
