The man who offered a ride to a student from Sherman Elementary School was a neighborhood dad, police said.
Original story: FAIRFIELD, Conn. - A Sherman Elementary School student told Fairfield police Wednesday that an unknown man offered him a ride home twice on Wednesday.
The student told police that the man was white, between 40 and 50 years old, with gray hair, wearing black glasses and driving a black Honda, possibly a Civic.
According to the student's report, the first time the man offered him a ride, he was close to Sherman. The man then followed him from the school and asked a second time whether he needed a ride when he was at the corner of Quincy Street and Fox Street.
Police patrols checked the area but were unable to locate a man or car fitting the description. An officer will be stationed in the area of Sherman School around dismissal time Thursday afternoon, police said.
Parents and school staff should remind their children of the following:
- They should walk home in a group or with a buddy.
- They should use routes that are busier, more open and well lit.
- They should always avoid any strangers attempting to engage them in a conversation.
- They should never approach a strange vehicle.
- They should tell an adult they trust immediately if they think they have been followed.
Residents are asked to report any strange persons, vehicles, or activity that you may observe to the police department at 203-254-4800.
Other incidents involving suspicious cars have been reported in Bethel, Redding and Norwalk recently.
