NORWALK, Conn. – Eight people were injured Monday - three of them seriously - in a two-car head-on accident in Norwalk.

The wreck took place on North Avenue near France Street near the Lillian August store at about 11:41 a.m. Norwalk firefighters had to use extrication equipment to free the occupants. Police said a black Honda SUV collided with a green Dodge Caravan when the Honda went over the double yellow line. The black Honda was carrying six passengers and two were in the Caravan, police said. The black SUV also hit a red Ford Mustang, police said. The Mustang's driver was not injured.

Norwalk police said eight people were taken to Norwalk Hospital for treatment. Three of them, including the drivers of both vehicles, had serious but non-life threatening injuries, police said. Police are investigating the cause of the accident, including whether a medical condition or mechanical problems may have played a role.

A portion of North Avenue was closed while Norwalk police investigated.
