Corey Roberts, 23, was charged with third-degree burglary, sixth-degree larceny and driving with a suspended license. He was held on $10,000 bond and will appear in court June 27.
Police received a call from a Fillow Street resident at 2:30 a.m. reporting a suspicious vehicle in the neighborhood. The caller said a man had sat parked in the car for about 15 minutes before getting out and walking away, police said.
Another resident reported a suspicious person exiting the car, and said the car was blocking his driveway, police said.
When officers checked the car, they found the keys on the passenger seat, as well as cash, a debit card and an I.D. belonging to a Richards Avenue man, police said. There were also some forms with Roberts's name on them, according to police reports.
Officers checked with the Richards Avenue man, who confirmed that the debit card and I.D. were his, police said. He told police the items were in his wallet, which he had left in his unlocked car. When he checked his car, the wallet was missing, police said.
The car was towed, and while officers were searching for the driver, they received a call that Roberts was in the lobby of police headquarters, police said. He was wet and winded, according to police reports. He told officers he had experienced car trouble, and had left the car to find help. He said that when he returned, the car was gone, police said.
Officers told Roberts that if he had been looking for help, he would have seen several police cars in the area, police said.
He then revised his statement, according to police reports, saying he had seen the police cars but had hidden in a garage and behind a wall because he was afraid he would be arrested for driving with a suspended license. He said he then hid in the woods, but a deer scared him, police said.
Roberts told officers that he had found the debit card and I.D. on the side of the road, according to police reports. When asked what he was doing in the area, Roberts said that he was killing time before going to see an ex-girlfriend, and did not want his current girlfriend to find out. Both women live in Bridgeport, and Roberts did not offer an explanation for what he was doing in Norwalk, police said. He was then taken into custody and arrested.
